Grownup Laughing

I look around
I see babes crawling
Are babes
Walking around.

I cry it out from a full belly;
You scream it at me in front of the space-heater
With your glowing toy in hand:

M-I-L-L-I-O-N-S like this!

We’ve grown up into this from under painless smiles,
And it’s all funny, now
Even if there’s no sleep
Dreaming warmth wide awake
While this loveless January wind
Rocks our cradle,
Dear.

Smile.

Fools Lot Accepted

I am
Laurelled
By indifference:

Your mothers,
They will not love me;

Your fathers,
How could they understand?

There is nothing but love
In the self making war;
Wisdom as light
Shines no victor.

Wisdom is
No victory,
No loss.

I send out my messages
So I can dissappear
Into the chorus,

Accepting
Fate’s not some hoary old grandfather
To smile and bounce little lives on bent knees.

What else to do, though,
But to play hard,
A good child
With meaning;

To choose wisely
This fools lot,
Cracked mouth
Unbroken,
Smiling wide.
